The Project Implementation Unit (PIU) of the Eastern Africa Regional Digital Integration Project (EA-RDIP) held a strategic consultation meeting with the Board of Directors of the National Fiber Optic Company (NFOC).
The meeting focused on advancing national broadband rollout, standardizing fiber optic deployment, and establishing sustainable public-private partnerships (PPPs) in the telecommunications sector.
Key outcomes of the engagement include:
• Coordinated National Backbone Plan: Synchronizing the EA-RDIP fiber deployment roadmap with NFOC’s long-distance transport network to maximize coverage while preventing duplicate infrastructure investments.
• Open-Access Principles: Ensuring that newly deployed terrestrial backbone assets operate on a non-discriminatory, open-access basis to foster healthy competition among all licensed telecom and internet providers.
• Last-Mile Connectivity to Underserved Communities: Developing targeted delivery models to connect schools, healthcare facilities, and regional district administrations to high-speed broadband.
Both leadership teams emphasized that modern broadband infrastructure is the bedrock of economic diversification, youth employment, and modern digital governance in Somaliland.
