Engineering route designs, fiber specifications, and civil trenching standards have been finalized for 900km of terrestrial fiber optic backbone across Somaliland regions.
The Ministry of Information and Communications Technology, supported by technical specialists under the EA-RDIP project, has concluded comprehensive engineering assessments for 900 kilometers of high-capacity terrestrial fiber optic backbone.
The network design aims to interconnect major population and commercial centers—including Hargeisa, Berbera, Burao, Borama, and eastern regional hubs—into a redundant, high-availability optical loop.
Key Technical Highlights:
- High-Density Optical Fiber: Utilizing modern ITU-T standard fiber optic cores capable of multi-terabit bandwidth transport.
- Redundant Regional Interconnects: Establishing terrestrial gateways connecting with regional networks in Eastern Africa to ensure low-latency data transit.
- Climate-Resilient Civil Works: Incorporating deep-trenching standards, protective HDPE ducting, and armored cable construction to withstand harsh climate and weather conditions.
- Commercial Neutrality: Guaranteeing equal-access wholesale transport pricing to allow local service providers to lower consumer broadband tariffs.
Tender documentation for phase-one civil works is undergoing final review prior to international competitive bidding release.
